Report of the Healing Ministry of the Madras Diocesan Medical Board 2005 - 2007

  

1. Introduction

“I am the Lord that healeth thee” “Give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good and His mercy endureth forever”.

Glory and Honor and Praise are to the Lord. Indeed He has done great things during this biennium in the Healing Ministry Medical Mission of the Madras Diocese. He has blessed and expanded our hospitals, and has been renewing and revamping the medical staff who are-serving in our hospitals. God, has been guiding the medical mission through the able and dynamic leadership of our beloved Bishop. Under his able guidance and direction, there has been expansion and growth in the medical Field in the Diocese unparalleled to any period in the past. There are a total for 143 Doctors, 349 Nurses and 899 Para-medical, Administrative & House keeping staffs who are working with a total annual budget of 20 crores a year. This was made possible only by the Grace of God and thanks be to Him.

2. Need for Mission Hospitals

Even with the mushrooming of many miniature medical clinics, Nursing Homes and Hospitals in and around Chennai and Tamilnadu, each specializing in different fields of medicine, the community is in great need of Medical Mission to excel these clinics by way of high quality of treatment at affordable cost. People both Christian and Non-Christians have started appreciating the work of our hospitals in Chennai and in the suburbs.

Financially also our hospitals which were working on break even levels in the past have crossed this limit during this biennium. Thanks be to God for the Medical Directors and Medical Superintendents, both men and women who had strived for this.

We have two Multi - Specialty Hospitats in the city of Chennai (Rainy and Kalyani) and three Peripheral Hospitals in Kanchipuram, Ikkadu and Nagari and 16 outreach centres situated in villages throughout the Madras Diocese.

3. Important Achievements & Milestones

There has been an overall development of the Medical services provided by the Diocesan Hospitals.

4. Dedication of Grace Chapel

The greatest blessing Kalyani Hospital has experienced during this biennium is Grace Chapel.

We are extremely grateful to, God for enabling us to construct and dedicate Grace Chapel on 15th Sep' 05 by our beloved Bishop which can accommodate 500 people at a time. The chapel is put to maximum use in bringing up revival among staff students and patients. Regular healing service are being conducted every Sunday in the chapel and patients are being anointed with oil and prayed. For the good Lord according to the Bible in James 5:16 is healing and restoring many patients through this ministry.

The First Anniversary celebration of Grace Chapel was celebrated in a grand manner on 15th Sep' 06.

5. Orthopaedic Services Collaboration With Christian Medical College Vellore

The Senior Orthopaedic Surgeons of CMC Vellore are extending surgical help with our orthopaedic surgeons in performing highly complicated spine surgery, hip replacement, knee replacement, Arthroscopy etc.. This service is going to be a great blessing for many of the ortho patients at a very reasonable cost, very sophisticated and difficult services can be done for people. This is a great blessing for the patients.

6. Starting of College of Nursing

The important achievement received by C.S.I. Rainy Hospital is permission granted by the Indian Nursing Council to start College of Nursing with an intake of 40 seats.

7. New Project - C.S.I Thiruvallur Hospital

C.S.I. Hospital, Ikkadu : The main Branch Hospital at No. 9, Motilal Street, Thiruvallur was constructed and dedicated on l7th March, 2007 by our beloved Bishop. This Hospital is self contained hospital with MRD, Casualty, Consultation rooms, Operation Theatre, Labour Ward, asmall 2 bedded ICU and Male and Female Wards. The hospital has also been equipped with new 100 mA X-ray machine, Alpha logic 100 Ultrasound Scan machine ECG machine, Boyles apparatus, High pressure AutocIave, Pulse oxymeter, Suction apparatus, O.T. Lights etc. 24 hours services are being provided by Doctors and Nurses and the numbers and of patients attending this hospital has exceeded 1000 per month Deliveries present are being conducted and minor surgery are being performed. For the present the patients for major surgeries are being shifted to lkkadu Hospital.

The new Medical Superintendent Dr. Arun Amold. MBBS., ADHA., DCHD., and the new Nursing Superintendent Mrs. Michael Jayarani Amold have been appointed from 5th Sep' 06

We wish and pray under this new leadership and God’s heIp this hospital will take off as a Primary Hospital in this area.

8. Centenary Celebration

C.S.I Hospital ‘Nagari had celebrated the Centenary Celebration on 29th Jan ’05. In memory of the founder Dr. (Mrs). Fanny Gibbens a centenary block was built with adonation of about 20.00 Iakhs by her grand daughter.

This was dedicated by our beloved Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. V. Devasahayam and declared opened by Rev. Dr. Des an Dev Water, the General Secretary Council for World Mission.

9. Equipment

Upgrading of Medical Technology in Mission Hospitals has become inevitable due to stiff competition faced with other private Hospitals

Very expensive equipment to assist the diagnostic have been purchased and installed in the hospitals viz., in

Kalyani

Dialysis Unit, Ventilator, ENT Operating Microscope, Pace maker, Arthroscope, Foetal Doppler, Blood Gas Analyzer, Sodium Potassium Analyzer, Multipara Meter Monitor, Bronchoscope.

Rainy

Multipara Meter Monitor, Gastro Video Scope, Dialysis machine, Blood Gas Analyzer. ISD, STD facilities have been provided in the hospital campus for staff and patients benefit for Kalyani and Rainy Hospitals.

Kanchipuram

Echo, Treadmill, New Bolero Vehicle, Blood Bank, Histopathology Dept, Laparoscopy operation, Video Endoscopy.

Nagari

Eye Screening, Ultrasound, Modern Laboratory, Radiology Dept.

10. Services and Facilities Available in Diocesan Hospitals - Medical Services

24 hours Casualty, Geneneral Medicine, General and Paediatric Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gyneacology, Urology, Orthopedics, Psychiatry, ENT, Eye, Allergy, Dermatology & Cosmetology, Neurology, Intensive Care Cardiac Unit, Newborn, Nephrology, Endoscopy, Key Hole Laparascopic Surgery, Well-Women Clinic, Master Health Check-up, Dental, Neuro Surgery, Physiotherapy and Fintness Centre, Heamatology, Gastroentrology, Neonatology Endocrinology, Cardiology, Plastic Surgery, Oncology (Cancer O.P.), Diet Clinic, Dialysis Unit. 24 Hours Tolal Heart Care in Collaboration with Medical Mission.

Other Facilities

Clinical, Biochemical, Cytology, Histopathology and Microbiology Laboratories, X-ray, ECG, Mammogram, Ultrascan, ECHO, Treadmill, Physiotherapy and Operation Theatres. Good oranized Nursing, 4-8 Bedded General Wards, Semi Private Wards and Single Private Rooms with/without A/c. with attached toilets, Deluxe Rooms, New Born preterm Nursery, Well Baby Clinic (every Fridays), High Risk pregnancy Clinic (every Tuesday), 24 hours Pharmacy, Canteen.

Special Service

Consultation for Eye and also Implantation of Ocular Lens (IOL) with small inision technique (Phaco), Contact Lens, Retina Clinic, A-Scan at subsidized rates for the poor and needy.

11. Buildings

Construction and Renovation Work

• In Kalyani (Construction of Nurses Hostel) : The extension of the Nurses Hostel has been done to accommodate 120 Nursing Students and Staff Nurses. This was dedicated by our Bishop on 4th Aug.’06

• Manampathy : The Manampathy Peripheral Centre at Chingleput has been demolished and construction of new building consisting of a Clinic with Nurses Quarters has been planned.

• In Rainy : The POW Store has been renovated and converted to Video Endoscopy Room.

• In Kanchipuram :

    1. New MRD Building.

    2. New Cycle Stand.

    3. Kids Park for Staff chiIdren.

    4. New Girls Hostel.

    5. Construction of Guest Room near Office.

• In Nagari : The centenary block has been built in memory of the founder Dr.(Mrs) Fanny Gibbens at a cost of Rs. 20/- lakhs by her grand daughter.

• Service and Income : There has been an all round increase in the number of patient in various department and the number of surgeries have also increased and also income of the Hospital during this biennium.

12. Eye Care Services

Sf. Michaels (UK project) has donated Financial help for free spectacles for poor and needy patients. We are grateful to God for the above organizations for the generous help and love for God’s work.

The Ophthalmic Departments in CSI Kalyani Hospital & is Outreach centre in CSI Hospital, Kanchipuram have done exceIenty well in this biennium. A total number of’ 22, 310 Out patients. 3792 Intra Ocular Lenses (IOL), 108 Cataract Surgeries and 187 Other surgeries have been performed in this biennium. Phaco surgeries are also performed at very affordable rate. A Team consisting of Ophthalmologists, Refractionists and Nurses visit remote places in and around Chennai, Chenglepet, Kanchipuram, Thiruvalur and Vellore Districts and conducted 178 Camps. 47136 Patients were screened during Eye Camps. Patients screened for Cataract surgeries are offered tree treatment, food and transport. We have received the following Equipment from CBM for Kalyani and Kanchipuram Hospitalsduring this Biennium. Autore fractometer,Ocu Scan RXP System (‘A’ Scan), Kerotometer, Surgical’ Vitrectomy Unit. We are extre mely gratefuf to CBM.

Optical Shop

An Optical shop has also been opened and is being run by the Eye Department successfully, which has found favour in the eyes of many patients.

13. Integration of Services

The consultants from both Kalyani and Rainy Hospitals have extended their services to CSI Hospital, Ikkadu and Nagari on regular weekly basis. Many patients have been operated upon and more complicated patients have been brought to main hospitals for further management. All the Diocesan Hospitals have also conducted Medical checkup in many schools in and around their locations and subsdized Medical checkup have been offered for many Missionaries belonging to various Missionary Organisations at concessional rate.

14. Pulse Polio Programme

Nursing Departments of various Hospitals have assisted’ the Tamil Nadu Goverment in Pulse Polio Programme.

Rainy Hospital Medical Camp was conduted at Koonimedu Kuppam at Marakanam. Doctors and Para Medical” Staff participated in the Camp.

Healing Ministry Week was celebrated.

15. Important Functions

Lamp lighting and Graduation Services were held in a grand manner in Rainy, Kalyani and Ikkadu Hospitals. Christmas Programme has been celebrated with great joy in all the hospitals with Carol Singing and various cultural programmes.

The Independence Day and Republic day function were conducted grandly in all hospitals with flag hoisting, followed by games and Sport for Staff and Students.

The Staff and Students were encouraged to participate in CMAI and other National, Regional Conferences and workshops.

16. Training Programme - DNB Family Medicine

C.S.I Kalyani General Hospital has been accredited for National Board Examination in Family Medicine ( 3yrs course) for four candidates from Jan' 06.

17. Diploma in Ophthalmic Technology (optometry) Course

I am glad to inform that C.S.I. Kalyani Hospital has started the CMAI approved 2 ½ year Diploma in Ophthalmic Technology (Optometry) Course). This was inaugurated by our Bishop on 4th August, 2006 and it is a feather in the cap for our Ophthalmic Department which is doing tremendous service to the poor and needy among both urban and rural areas and bring light into their lives.

18. Others

Many staff of the hospital are encouraged to pursue higher education and be equipped to serve better to our Diocesan Institutions. Nursing staff are sponsored to do post basic B.Sc. Nursing and M.Sc. Nursing in CMC, VeIIore. MBBS Doctors are sponsored to do Diploma, P .G. Courses in CMC, VelIore.

19. Wholistic Healing

Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth. (III John : 2) I am happy to inform that for the staff, students and patients in all the Diocesan Hospitals, SpirituaI Upliftment is given great importance. The following Spiritual activities are taking place, like daily devotion, Sunday / Community Worship Service in the Hospital chapel communion service on first of every month at 8 a.m. in the Hospital. Student Christian Movement for students with regular Bible study, prayer and singing, including games and quiz to enlighting .their ideas and the “ward ministry” with sharing of Gospel and prays for sick patients. The Services conducted at the chapel reach the patient in the ward through the Public Address System.

20. Retreat for Diocesan Medical Board Staff and Students in C.S.I Madras Diocese

• The C.S.I Diocesan Medical Workers retreat was held in Northwick Hr. Sec. School af Royapuram on the 11th of November, 2006.

• The Theme of the retreat was “Obey the Voice of the Lord and do His commandments”. Inspiring messages were given by our beloved Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. V. Devasahayam, Dr. Jebaraj Samuel.

• The Students Retreat was heId in Grace Chapel, CSI. Kalyani Hospital on 18th Nbvember, 2006.

• The Theme of the retreat was “Obey the Voice of the Lord and do His commandments”. Inspiring messages were given by our beloved’ Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. V. Devasahayam, Br. Ashok Vedanayagam.

• The Retreat was attended by 760 Staff and Students of our’ Diocesan Hospitals. The retreat helped us to re-dedicate and commit ourselves to His calling in the Healing Ministry.

May our good lord enable us to fulfill His vision of shinning His Light in Darkness in the coming years.
